Drugs in the New Millennium: Mother Nature vs. Homo Sapiens?
نویسنده
چکیده
Cancer, malaria, AIDS, tuberculosis, and their corresponding multi-drug-resistant strains among other diseases have entered into the 21st century as major human medical problems. Since ancient times mankind has dealt with health problems using drugs produced by Nature. The plant kingdom has long been exploited in many aspects and specially as a source of drugs. Indeed, evidence about the first known drug "ephedra" (ephedrine), which was isolated from the plant Ephedra sinica (horsetail), go back to the Bronze Age in China. The impressive chemical diversity found in Nature comes from millions of different living organisms, which often produce powerful bioactive metabolites. This is not surprising, bearing in mind that natural products are the result of a natural "lead optimization" process of many years of evolution and diverse survival mechanisms.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv: In Silico Drug Targets Identification by Metabolic Pathways Analysis
Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is a pathogenic bacteria species in the genus Mycobacterium and the causative agent of most cases of tuberculosis. Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death in the world from a bacterial infectious disease. This antibiotic resistance strain lead to development of the new antibiotics or drug molecules which can kill or suppress the growth of Mycobacterium t...
متن کاملSelected Genetic Destination: The Rise of Homo sapiens genomicus
Selected genetic destination is a species’, such as Homo sapiens, possessing control of the genetic evolution of a species (other species and their own species) with the use of genetic engineering techniques (Grandy 2010b). Since the completion of the human genome project in 2003 scientists and philosophers have speculated on the possibility of not only curing numerous diseases, but also the po...
متن کاملHomo sapiens, Homo neanderthalensis and the Denisova specimen: New insights on their evolutionary histories using whole-genome comparisons
After a brief review of the most recent findings in the study of human evolution, an extensive comparison of the complete genomes of our nearest relative, the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), of extant Homo sapiens, archaic Homo neanderthalensis and the Denisova specimen were made. The focus was on non-synonymous mutations, which consequently had an impact on protein levels and these changes were ...
متن کاملThe exaptation of the parietal lobes in Homo sapiens
As duly noted by Bruner & Lozano (this volume), paleoneurological evidence reveals that the most dramatic morphological changes in Homo sapiens' brain evolution have occurred in the areas which process and integrate visual and spatial information, the parietal lobes. Further, they purport that one derived feature of Neandertal behavior was the use of their teeth as a third hand or tool. While t...
متن کاملBeing human is a gut feeling
Some metagenomic studies have suggested that less than 10% of the cells that comprise our bodies are Homo sapiens cells. The remaining 90% are bacterial cells. The description of this so-called human microbiome is of great interest and importance for several reasons. For one, it helps us redefine what a biological individual is. We suggest that a human individual is now best described as a supe...
